One more blessing... [Thursday, 21 May 2009]

Before I tell you all what just happened, I just thought I'd let you know that this week has been amazing. I've exploded genealogically speaking and I've gotten a wonderful amount of letters and packages. What happened tonight takes the cake.

I was a bit discouraged today with my genealogy. Nothing I tried seemed to be working, and the world seemed to be mocking me. I had just done one of many futile searches for Gustav Auring (Google Books, as a matter of fact), when I felt inspired to do the same search with John Gilbertson. When I did, I got a few that were quite obviously not who I was looking for. Then, in the middle of the list, was a book entitled JACOB PERKINS OF WELLS, MAINE AND HIS DESCENDANTS 1583-1936. You will not know the connection between these two names, but I happen to know that John Gilbertson's wife was named Abigail Perkins and that she was from Maine. This instantly grabbed my attention, needless to say. I wasn't able to look at a preview of the book on Google Books, so I quickly looked through the Family History Library catalog to see if we had the book here in the library. We did. Upon looking through the book (thank heavens for indexes!), I found the family I was looking for. Sure enough, there were the Gilbertsons, and Abigail's ancestry was traced back to 1583 in England. How marvelous a find this was! I am so grateful that God inspired me to try just one more search before I closed up shop tonight! I am now going to order this book on the internet so that I can have a personal copy to work from. My great week continues!
